The thing about for-profit is that for-profit is often a good thing on the grounds of the bills not having to be paid by subscribers.

I like that Ms Magazine doesn't have ads now, from a purely selfish standpoint. But I can't ignore the fact that when I was 11, and 12, and my parents were erratic and didn't always approve of me reading it, I could afford to buy it out of my allowance anyway, just like Cosmo or a comic book (hahahah, comic book prices--do 12 year olds still buy those?). It's more expensive now than it was when I was 11 because it is paid for by subscribers and newsstand purchasers, and less widely printed and sold--you can't find it in the grocery store any more, which means if I was 11 today, I might not even be able to find it even if I did have the money.
