Oh, there are definitely some advantages to for-profit, and access is one of the big ones. There's a lot of feminist writing that's stuck in scholarly journals that are even harder to get to than Ms. right now.

But I do think that there were some inaccuracies and misdiagnoses of the problem in the Jezebel article that may or may not have been caused (or at least not discouraged in a way that they might have been in a different publication model) by the site's need to attract a lot of readers in order to turn a profit or cover the costs of their servers. The same phenomena that leads to fandom fights and trolls may also have been factor. In my ideal world, articles from a Jezebel-esque source would be both of high quality and available to everyone, and advertising would be a much less problematic industry. I'm trying to figure out how to make that real world a reality, but I haven't gotten there yet.
